Above is the first synth I ever made - and from absolute scratch too! using a schematic from Ciat Lonbarde. It is an open circuit, meaning it uses touch sensors - mounted to the outside of the synth casing/shell using conductive copper tape - to complete the circuit through the users body (because we are all electrical beings!). The circuit itself is mounted on a little paper mache dude that I made to go inside the shell and who has a speaker for a tummy. There is also a switch that can change the audio signal to a 1/4" jack for when you need to get a bit louder.
